Azeem Hamid

Azeem Hamid is a Pakistani digital artist, designer, and researcher whose practice bridges speculative design, participatory processes, and postcolonial critique. Born and raised in Lahore, he began experimenting with digital media in the mid-2000s, working with early versions of Photoshop and Illustrator before formally studying Communication Design at Beaconhouse National University, School of Visual Arts and Design. Hamid’s early work engaged with historical narratives and political critique, notably through immersive digital installations that examined repetitive state narratives and mediated memory in Pakistan. Rooted in South Asian cultural contexts, his practice has consistently interrogated systems of representation, censorship, and identity formation. Over time, his focus has evolved toward relational and participatory design methodologies, exploring how audiences interact with imagery, space, and more-than-human environments. Currently pursuing a PhD at the Estonian Academy of Arts, Hamid investigates public participation, speculative design, and the ethical dimensions of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence. His research challenges human-centred design paradigms, proposing expanded frameworks that consider ecological, social, and technological entanglements. Through installations, interactive environments, and hybrid digital-analog systems, his work critiques consumer culture, colonial knowledge systems, and the infrastructural gaps of archiving in South Asia. Hamid’s practice moves between Pakistan and Europe, maintaining a critical dialogue between local histories and global digital infrastructures.
