This installation was a part of a group show: HERE, THERE, NOWHERE exhibiting artists; Kareen Adam, Manal & Fazail. My work explores the location of my body and self in relation to our place of origin (The Maldives).

An old, weathered door, found in a used furniture store in Melbourne and echoing the door of my childhood home in the Maldives, hangs suspended in the gallery, fronted by a spread of white sand. Onto this surface, a video of waves breaking on the shore of Hulhumalé; one of the places where I used to swim with fond memories, is projected.

The projected water appears to surge beneath the door, spill across the sand, and then recede. Each wave is accompanied by a booming sound, transmitted through a subwoofer affixed to the door, causing it to vibrate with each impact.

The work creates a layered sensory experience: viewers hear, see, and physically feel the force of the waves, while their footprints remain in the sand as imprints of passage, traces of both presence and absence.

Fazail Lutfi is a Maldivian-born interdisciplinary artist whose practice spans video, installation, and sculpture. His works create immersive spaces where affect, experience, and sensation take precedence, inviting viewers into open-ended encounters shaped by ambiguity and interpretation. Rooted in themes of identity, memory, place, and imagination, his practice reflects both personal histories and broader cultural contexts.

Fazail earned a BA in Dramatic Arts from the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa (2001), and an MFA in Interdisciplinary Studies (Visual Arts and Media Production & Studies) from the University of Regina, Canada (2007). Currently based in Melbourne, Australia, he continues to experiment with interdisciplinary forms, blending conceptual inquiry with sensory engagement to expand the language of contemporary art.
